Fateful Allure

The landscape is an alluring subject. For the viewer, a marvel. For the industrialist, an investment. This project depicts how the landscape has been changed by the mining industry on a visual level. Some of the images appear abstract – the viewer struggles to determine the scale of the subject. Others express the enormity of the affected landscape by including identifiably human elements.

A long history of mining parallels the development of modern society. The human race is particularly good at utilizing the earth to our advantage. Examples of this include mineral extraction, metal, and aggregate mining. Among other locations, these examples are particularly visibly recognizable along the Wasatch front in central and northern Utah, USA.
